Choosing Rest

By Brooke

How hard is it for you to choose rest? When you step back to examine your day and your attitude towards its activities, where does “rest” come into play? Often we don’t even think of rest until we’ve run ourselves so ragged that we have no other choice. But what if we chose to rest simply because of it’s opportunity to bring us fulfillment and life?

“By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.” –Genesis 2:2-3 (NIV)

Unlike us, the Lord is serious about rest. Serious. He speaks of it in His word 271 times in the NIV translation. To rest is to remember. If God Himself rests, we have to recognize its importance in our lives too.

I don’t think God gets tired and yet we see that He rests. I think its because He doesn’t want to miss the goodness of His creation. If God rests in order to ensure that He doesn’t miss the goodness of His work, why do we wait to rest until we are dead tired, dragging ourselves half-wrecked around our lives, barely able to keep our eyes open? That’s not rest, that’s exhaustion. We have to ask ourselves how we can enjoy the goodness of our God and our lives when we are living like that?

Jesus came to give us life and life abundantly. Rest helps us maintain balance and gives us space from ourselves in order to remember the good things God has given us in our lives.

So choose rest today, friends. And not when you’ve reached the end of yourself. Rest, recognize and remember His goodness in the land of the living today. And go forward determined to make rest a habit.

Brooke, I stumbled across Holy Yoga through my struggles with my practising yoga as a Christian and all the controversy around it. I am praying through my calling and whether the Holy Instructor is the way. Still doing so whilst being empowered daily through your blog posts.

This post is very invigorating, ironically. I’ve been so absorbed with searching with my calling, juggling my life as a working mother of two……I need Rest. And this is what God has wants. Thank you for sharing. God Bless~

Hi Brooke! I am so appreciative of Holy Yoga & didn’t know how much my body would love it! I’ve been practicing less than a year but really enjoy connecting w/ God – body soul and spirit -through our Holy Yoga practice. I’m praying towards next year’s India trip, to see if it is what the Lord has for me. I wanted to get some practical details, approx cost, mission of the trip & duration. I am not an instructor, but have a big heart for missions & the Great Commission. What an excellent bridge to bring God’s Love & salvation to India-Holy Yoga! I am thankful to God for your courageous & kind heart. May God grant you the desires of your heart as you delight yourself in Him.
    Waiting on Jesus,
